Seafood is highly perishable. If you are buying seafood at the supermarket, make it one of your last purchases. Use your eyes, hands, and nose when selecting fresh fish or shellfish. Your purchase should feel cold to the touch. And it shouldn’t smell “fishy.” The odor should be similar to that of a sea breeze.
For delicious and healthy meals, consider these pointers:
- Look for fish that has been flash-frozen at the source: Flash-freezing locks in the good taste and texture and allows the fish to retain its many health benefits, too.
- Choose healthy: Look for frozen seafood products that, when combined with a simple salad or an easy side dish, complete a healthy meal.
- Be adventurous: Try frozen fish products inspired by new and interesting recipes. Frozen seafood products make it easy to try something new.
The shelf life of fish depends on the variety and its unique quality at the time of purchase.
After shopping, immediately store commercially wrapped frozen seafood in your freezer. Put it in the coldest part of the freezer, at a temperature as close to 0°F or -18°C as possible. As with other frozen foods, avoid prolonged storage by planning your purchases, keeping in mind “first in, first out.” Commercially frozen seafood can be stored in the freezer for up to six months.
